The Academy Awards 2022 latest updates live – follow Sky News’ coverage of this year’s ceremony which has seen Will Smith slap Chris Rock in the face, Troy Kotsur became the first deaf man to win an Oscar, CODA bag best picture and Kenneth Branagh win the original screenplay prize

The dark and the light’ – Sir Kenneth Branagh reacts to winning the Oscar for best original screenplay

Following his win for best original screenplay, Sir Kenneth Branagh has spoken about the making of Belfast.

Over the years, the actor, writer and director notched up a record eight nominations spanning seven categories, but always came away empty-handed – until now.

Belfast, which is set during the Troubles and written and directed by Sir Kenneth, is partly based on his own experiences as a boy and helped him to the prize for best original screenplay on Sunday night.

He said making the film allowed him to embrace “the light and the dark” of his working-class childhood.

Speaking in the press room, he said: “I think the thing that stayed with me was just the sense of how much at that time I felt like I knew who I was. I had a very strong sense of who I was.

“Making the film allowed me to return to that. My sister said, ‘This film has really outed you as a kind of working-class Belfast boy’, and, yes, it has.

“This was a way of not just acknowledging but embracing everything about it – the dark and the light.

‘It was the wrong thing to do’ – Labour leader chimes in on Will Smith slap debate

Even Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer has offered his opinion on Will Smith slapping Chris Rock at the Oscars.

He acknowledged that attacks on family members stir emotions but said the actor’s response to comedian Chris Rock’s comment fell on the “wrong side of the line”.

Speaking on LBC, Mr Starmer said: “Of course, there are circumstances and anybody who insults family members excites something quite emotional in all of us.

“But, on the other hand, to go up and hit someone in that way is wrong, I’m afraid. It was the wrong thing to do.

“It was at the Oscars, it’s got all the cameras there, millions of people watching.”

He added that he was “struck by the fact that it didn’t appear to me to be completely spontaneous” with Smith appearing to walk up to the stage “quite calmly and then hit someone”.

“I’m sorry, for me that’s the wrong side of the line.”
